Historical Overview:
The Department of General Sciences was established in 2010 belonging to the College of Education and Language. The first group of DGSC students was joined in the academic year of 2011-2012.The graduates of DGSC will be provided with professional knowledge and scientific techniques to enrich student’s information regarding natural and general sciences.


Objectives of DGSC:
  1. Preparing graduate students with high quality of teaching capability and enhancing their capacity in order to contribute to build a new generation of basic school students. 
  2. Develop professional graduates by providing intensive academic courses, laboratory works, project paper preparations, seminar presentations, and educational trainings. 
  3. Building not only undergraduate teachers, but an academic staff on a postgraduate level as well.


Department Vision:
  1. DGSC is stepping forward to compete with other scientific departments elsewhere.
  2. It is expected that the graduates of the DGSC to become a good lecturers as they are well-prepared scientifically and educationally. 
  3. The graduates of DGSC are well prepared regarding to new practical and theoretical curriculum and scientific change.
  4. Students are taught basic topics of natural sciences like biology, physics, chemistry, and geology to help them best prepare to teach general sciences.
  5. DGSC is certain about the ability of students to adapt themselves with challenging situations while teaching in suitable way

Department Mission:
The area of DGSC allows each student to design their academic program in the general and natural sciences. DGSC offers intensive and contemporary courses for preparing a well-educated generation, thus enabling students to become successful professionals, academics, scientifically literate citizens and leaders.

Graduates of the department are expected to be able (outcomes):
  • An understanding of major concepts, theoretical and experimental findings in the general and natural sciences.
  • An ability to employ critical thinking and efficient problem-solving skills in different science areas.
  • An ability to conduct a team work in both classroom and laboratory. 
  • Capability to use modern scientific instruments for analyzing purposes.
  • Awareness about the proper ways and regulations for safe handling and use of chemicals.
  • An ability to illustrate the environmental issues facing our natural environment.

Future job prospects:

The graduates of DGSC will be able to work as full scale teachers in basic schools, since they are overloaded with scientific knowledge and teaching techniques. The DGSC graduates can work for other career interests as well. It is an appropriate department for different related careers of general and natural sciences (biology, geosciences, chemistry, mathematics and physics).


Language:
The studying language at the DGSC is English for all courses, except for few courses where the language of study is Kurdish.


Duration and starting time:
The duration of study at DGSC is 4 full-time academic years. The new academic year starts in September and ends in June of the next year.
Study Method:
Students in the department of General Sciences are encouraged to develop their knowledge and academic skills by providing varieties of learning opportunities such
 as lectures, tutorials, workshops, exams, report preparation, poster design, oral presentations, field work...etc.]
