Department of English Language 

Needless to say that nowadays the English language plays an important role in all the fields of life. And thus, English department in College of Education and Language, University of Charmo has an important role in preparing efficient and well-prepared teachers to teach successfully at high schools in Kurdistan region. The aim of this department is bringing the latest and the most up to date knowledge to the students of English department and consequently supplying Kurdish people in Kurdistan region with high quality and efficient English language teachers.

Background History of English Department:


The department of English was first established in 2008 when it opened its doors in the academic year of 2008-2009 to welcome a bunch of 67 students. The decision of its opening was due to the fact that Kurdistan Region in general and Chamchamal district in particular were in need to efficient English language teachers who are well prepared/promoted to teach successfully.
This department accepts graduates of grade 12 from both literary and scientific branches. The first cohort of students graduated from this department in the academic year of 2011-2012. Since then, the department has had almost similar graduates every year. The majority of the graduates are now working in the sector of education, and some in the private sectors/companies in Kurdistan Region of Iraq in addition to a number of the graduates who have pursued their postgraduate studies.


Mission and Vision of English Department

Mission:

The English Department, as a basic structure of college of Education and Language at the University of Charmo, helps students build knowledge of the content and methods of literary studies, TESOL, and English education. Our department strengthens the education of students by developing a deepened understanding of language and literacy, the value of critical reading and effective writing, and the richness of literature, past and present. The department offers an undergraduate plan of study to prepare secondary school teachers of English as a major and to qualify graduates to do language-skilled business like translation in governmental and private sectors as a minor.

Vision:

Knowledge and a love of language and literature in our students' minds are what the department seeks to foster. To this end no effort is saved to provide students in all emphasis areas with a coherent curricular framework and relevant, well-structured course choices. We teach a variety of literary, analytical, pedagogical, and theoretical skills. We teach students to speak, read, and write effectively and how to transfer this knowledge via teaching to EFL learners. Besides, our department encourages students to think deeply and to reflect on what they have learned. Our teaching staff members do their best to encourage a love of learning and appreciation for education.

Language of Teaching:
During the whole four years of studying in this department, all the subjects are taught/studied in English.

Future Job Opportunities:
The graduates of this department will have various and almost guaranteed future job opportunities in various fields of life. The doors of the government and private sectors will be wide open to welcome them since the English language speakers are expected to have more chances of employment in the different sectors including government and private ones.

Duration of Study:
The duration of study in English department is four years full time. It starts from September and ends in June.
